Lemnos is one of the most beautiful islands of the Eastern Aegean. According to mythology, Hephaestus – the God of Fire – landed on this island during a dispute he had with his father Jupiter. Homer refers to Lemnos in the Iliad and Odyssey. It seems that the first inhabitants of the island were Pelasgi and Sintes from Continental Greece region (Sterea Ellada) and Minyes from Thessaly that arrived there 6000 years ago.
Myrina is the capital of the island and its name came from the name of the wife of the island’s first king called Thoantas. The most beautiful sightseeing of Myrina is the large impressive Byzantine Castle built on the steep cliff. The tourist is fascinated by its amazing view, the huge walls and is surprised by the deers that live within the castle.
A small distance from Myrina, nestled on the side of a hill, there is a beautiful village called Platy with picturesque beaches and extraordinary views. The beach of Platy, where Studios Fereniki are located, has the largest and most peaceful sandy beaches and is an up-and-coming tourist spot. Other traditional villages of Lemnos are the following: Thanos with its sandy beach Neavgati, Kontos with its traditional houses built of stone, Tsimandria with Kechagiades and Nea Koutali with the refugees from Near East. Between Myrina and Kornos there are the Thermes Baths that cure rheumatics.
Kaspakas is a beautiful village with the church of Ai Gianni, a pebbly beach under an imposing cliff and two continuous sandy beaches. There is also Aghios Dimitrios, the village of refugees from Near East – Reis Ntere – that has a long tradition in viticulture and in music. The villages Kornos, Sardes, Dafni, Katalako have stone fences all over the island and the village Livadochori is built in the middle of a very fertile land. The villages of Atsiki, Varos and Lychna have spectacular views of the bay of Moudros and the airport of Lemnos which is one of the biggest airports in Greece. Moudros is one of the biggest natural ports in the country where the Greek fleet was anchored, while Kotopouli is one of the biggest villages. In a small distance from these villages there is the archaeological site of Ephaestia and in the north the Kavirio Sanctuary and under the steep cliff there is the cave of Philoktitis.
Lemnos is a very hospitable island with many possibilities and choices of relaxation and entertainment. The beautiful beaches and the sightseeing of the island are what fascinate our tourists. You can taste traditional food and products of the island such as wine, ouzo, cheese dried in the sun, local noodles, thyme honey and a large quantity of fish and meat in the beautiful fishermen’s ports and the traditional taverns of the island.
In the evening, you can also have dinner at the large number of traditional taverns and restaurants that are in the capital Myrina and the other villages or enjoy yourself at one of the various modern nightclubs that are open mainly in summer.
